HistoryThe name Aronimink comes from the Aronimink Golf Club in Newtown Square. The name Delaware was given to the people who lived along the river that was named after Lord de la Warr, governor of the Jamestown Colony. After moving from west Philadelphia, the Aronimink Golf Club bought 100 acres of the Garrett family farm and constructed the Aronimink Golf course in 1911 on the property that is now Drexelbrook. Ferne Blvd. was the entrance to the golf course. In 1926 Aronimink moved to their present 300 acre golf course in Newtown Square. The local area around the 1911 golf course was called Aronimink Golf Estates, generally along the 600 blocks of Drexel and Childs plus Aronimink Place. The name Huey from Huey Avenue was one of the officers of the golf club when it was located here. There was even an Aronimink Transportation Company that got the trolley line going before Red Arrow which is probably why the trolley stop is called Aronimink Board MembersJim Glatts Barbara Bosha Antoinette Testa Ann Marie Veneroni Derrick Smith Philip Jordan Donald Bonnet Joseph Mylotte |
